"Miracle in a Box"

North Bay filmmaker John Korty’s Miracle in a Box is a can’t-miss for proud locals. None of us should be shocked to learn that we have an artisanal piano-restoration company in our midst, as well as a director with enough grace, sensitivity, and story sense to make a fine documentary about it...

This film doesn’t push any politics or rake any muck, and it isn’t stylized to within an inch of its life. Instead, it offers New Yorker–style attention-span revitalization: You didn’t know how interested you were...

Review:
"John Allair Digs In"

After screening John Korty's new documentary, viewers may find themselves thinking—"Man, I want that piano tuner's autograph."

It's not every day one wishes to meet a piano tuner. But the subject of Korty's John Allair Digs In! is no everyday piano tuner.

The 25-minute film dubs him "Marin County's original rock 'n' roller"; Huey Lewis calls him "the godfather of this whole Marin County music scene"; Maria Muldaur describes his playing as "a rambunctious, irrepressible amount of joy."

This latest doc by Korty—The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman, Who Are the DeBolts (and Where Did They Get 19 Kids?)—further cements the West Marin director as Marin's quintessential filmmaker—capturing not only one of its true characters, but placing him entirely within the context, and at the apex, of the county music scene and its roots-rock obsession. If the Marin Rocks exhibit ever happens, there'd better be a corner set aside for John Allair.

First Film:

"John Allair Digs In"

John Allair is the original rock 'n roll piano player of Marin County.  Long before Jefferson Airplane and The Grateful Dead, he got his fellow students at San Rafael High dancing to music none of them had heard before.  He and buddy, Pete Lind, at the tender age of 16, got everyone rocking. The film traces his days playing with Van Morrison, Terry Haggerty, Phil Lesh and many others.  Offering their own memories are Huey Lewis, Mark Isham, Maria Muldar Elvin Bishop, music critic Joel Selvin, and Will Costa.

Second Film:

"Miracle in a Box"

Miracle in a Box is an inspiring film about the coming together of three events: the bequest of a grand piano, the student competition to win it, and the months and months of work required to make it sing again.  Appearing on screen are Garrick Ohlsson, touring concert pianist; Jake Heggie, opera composer; Tammy Hall, jazz artist; Frederick Hodges, music stylist; Jerry Kuderna, Bay Area modernist; and Steve Willis, blues and boogie songwriter and performer. The narration is spoken by the distinguished actor, John Lithgow.

Beyond the world of music, the documentary also provides a good look at some alternative ways to improve the American workplace, the quality of its products and the rewards for its employees.
